STARTING AIKIDOThe Genyokan dojo in Ann Arbor offers adult and youth level introductory courses.
Introductory courses guide beginners through dojo etiquette, warm-up exercises, basic Aikido movements, and techniques with partners. No previous training in martial arts or sports is required. Beginning students are asked to wear loose fitting clothing such as sweats or comfortable training wear that cover the knees and elbows. Following the 5 adult introductory classes, students are invited to join the intermediate class where more advanced techniques, rolls, and movements with a wooden sword are introduced. The introductory classes may be repeated if desired. Beginning Yoshokai Aikido classes are also offered at most other dojos. Aikido is based on the martial arts of the Japanese Samurai and includes both physical and mental training. It is an invigorating and rewarding physical activity with smooth, graceful movements, pins, and falls that can be learned by almost anyone. Aikido provides an opportunity to participate in a challenging fitness activity in a non-competitive environment. Aikido is not a fighting art, rather, students work together as partners to create harmonious techniques and movements. Yoshokai Aikido was developed by Kushida-sensei through 40 years of training, study, and teaching; and is headquartered at the Genyokan dojo in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
